THE BEST IS YET TO COME

It’s no use telling the average New Zealander that he’s better off than a German or a Portuguese or a Russian worker. What he wants is that he himself shall be better off tomorrow than he is today. He demands an increasing standard of living not only for himself but for his children coming after him. And it’s no use preaching him contentment. But the man with money to invest is also a New Zealander and he, too, wants a fair return for the capital he risks. So the happy little task of Private Enterprise is to provide a higher standard of living both for the worker and the man who puts up the money. And it can be done the moment people realise that the conditions which make it possible to arrive at both larger payrolls and larger profits are the same conditions. How can it be done? By working to produce more and more of the things we want . . . by improved machines and more efficient methods . . . closer co-operation between the two partners in prosperity, Labour and Capital. Once we have learned this in a free, competitive system of private enterprise, we’ll soon find that all previous efforts to raise the standard of living will seem feeble by comparison. Issued in the interests of all section* of the community by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand- —P.B.A.
