GOLDEN WEDDING
MR AND MRS G. J. H. GARTON Mr and Mrs G. J. H. Garton, wellknown residents of Opawa, will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding tomorrow, when they will entertain close friends at a small party at their home in Opawa road.
Mrs Garton, formerly Miss Caroline Tadman Foulkes, and Mr George James Harold Garton, were married in 1905 in the Durham Street South Methodist Church by the Rev. R. J. Murray, a friend of the bridegroom’s family. Mr and Mrs Garton were both born in Christchurch, and were schoolmates at Woolston School. Their first home was in Riccarton.
Mr Garton, who is an engineer, served his time at Messrs Andersons, Ltd-, in Lichfield street, and later worked for Messrs Scott Brothers in Manchester street before joining the staff of the Addington Workshops. Both Mr and Mrs Garton are keen horticulturists, and their gardens have always been beauty spots. For 35 years Mrs Garton has been a member of the Home Economics Association, and has long been the leader of its garden circle. Many years ago, in appreciation of her valuable work, she was elected a life member. In 1927 Mrs Garton joined the Repertory Society, and 26 years ago' she became a member of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, and has continued her membership and her active interest in its activities up to the present. She is also a member of the Canterbury Women’s Club.
Mr Garton has had a long and close association with the Masonic lodge. He is a foundation member and life member of the Riccarton Lodge No. 276, which he joined 40 years ago, and he is a life member of the Canterbury Kilwinning Royal Arch Chapter. In their present home in Opawa Mr and Mrs Garton have lived for 14 years.. \
