MOTORIST SENT TO PRISON

INTOXICATION CHARGE ADMITTED

On a charge of driving a motor vehicle at Carleton on April 1 while under the influence of liquor or drugs, Hugh Hector McCaw, a bulldozer driver, of Oxford, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Rangiora, by Mr J. A. Ivory, J.P., and Mr L. D. J. Smith, J.P. In addition. McCaw’s driving licence was cancelled for three years, to be renewed only by sanction of the Court. Sergeant G. Urquhart said that Constable W. Theyer saw that McCaw, who was a bulldozer driver, was under the influence and was not fit to drive a rental truck he had with him at Oxford. The constable telephoned to the Rangiora police station for assistance, whereupon McCaw drove off. McCaw was later found on the roadside near Oxford, drinking. He was taken, struggling, in a car to Rangiora, where he was medically certified as being not fit to, drive.
