ABOUT 220 PERSONS SAVED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 5. Although the death-roll from drowning was high last year—l3s—it would probably have been much higher but for the efforts of voluntary life-saving patrols. The New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Association announced today that about 220 rescues were made during the last six months. The figures for the Auckland district are not yet available, but it is known that they will be at least 65. Official figures for the other districts are:— Canterbury 42, Taranaki 31, Manawatu 30, Otago 30, Gisborne 14, Wellington 8. There were no drownings on patrolled beaches.
