DANGER IN FAR EAST
Warning Given By Dulles (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 5. The United States Secretary of State (Mr Dulles) said today that the Far Eastern situation was highly dangerous and the question of war or peace was up to the Chinese Communists. If there was war in the Formosa area, he said, it would be entirely due to Chinese Communist provocation and initiative. Mr Dulles said, at a press conference, that the United States was in close contact with Australia, New Zealand, its European Allies, India, ami other countries.
Each of them realised, he said, that Formosa was a highly dangerous situation and they all wanted to eliminate the dangerous elements.
Asked if the United States was trying to- obtain commitments from the Allies supporting the United States’ position for the defence of Formosa, Mr Dulles said it was the basic desire of the United States to tie together its scattered defence treaties in that part of the world.
