MEXICAN RAILWAY DISASTER
Train Plunges Into
Ravine
(Rec. 8.30 am.) GUADALAJARA (Mexico), April 4, A number of coaches of a crowded passenger train plunged into a mountain ravine last night, and the Governor of Colima province reported that nine persons had been killed and 78 injured, eight of them seriously. The Governor (Mr Gonzales Lugo), who took charge of rescue operations, reached the scene of the wreck in a rescue train.
He said one coach plunged to the bottom of a 210 ft deep canyon and that two more tumbled half-way down. Most of the victims were in the first coach.
Mr Gonzales Lugo said he believed all the dead and injured had been removed from the wreckage. But a rescue brigade had remained behind to make a thorough search at daylight. The passengers were Holy Week holiday-makers. No rescue crew could get down the steep rocky sides of the ravine immediately and all efforts to aid the injured were delayed until daybreak. Three rescue trains loaded with soldiers, doctors, nurses and wrecking crews set out for the scene last night.
