BEEF TRADE PICKS UP A fair demand obtained for New Zealand lamb on Smithfield market last week, with values barely • steady. The mutton trade was slow and there were no alterations in prices. M There was a good demand tor New Zealand chilled beef and prices rose by id to 3d per lb. Frozen beef had better inquiry at fractionally firmer prices. The following are the ruling prices at Smithfield, according to advice received at the week-end by the New Zealand Meat producers’ Board from its London office, the prices for the previous week being appended:—

New Zealand chilled beef is quoted at 2s 5d to 2s 7d for ox hinds and Is 6d to Is 7d for fores. New Zealand frozen beef second quality, is quoted at Is 3d for hinds and Is 2d for fores. First quality frozen beef is not quoted, w SYDNEY EXCHANGE PERMITS NEW BRANCH OFFICERS An amendment to the rules of the Sydney Stock Exchange now allows members of the Exchange to open brandh offices anywhere in Australia. The amendment was passed at the annual meeting of the Exchange last week. The previous rule had restricted members to one branch office, which had to be in Sydney. (Earlier last month, a second Melbourne firm of brokers opened a branch office in Sydney.) The chairman of the Sydney Exchange (Mr R. W. King), who recently visited New Zealand, was re-elected. WELLINGTON CUSTOMS. RETURNS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 4. Customs returns for the port of Wellington totalled £2,275,830 for the month of March, as against £1,979,444 for the same month last year.
