ENROLMENTS FOR FORCE
HALF OF APPLICANTS REJECTED Of the 54 men in Southern Military District who have had their applications accepted for service with the New Zealand commando force to serve in Malaya, 27 have so far been rejected for various reasons. Of the remaining 27 applicants, only a small proportion has been put through the aptitude, physical and dental tests. As well as the 54 men whose applications have been accepted, many others have made inquiries about the force since the campaign opened late last month. Quite a large proportion of these men signified their intention to apply for service, but before they could make out their applications, were rejected—mainly on dental grounds. No applicants with dental plaxes are being accepted, so that intending applicants wearing dental plates were immediately rejected. . Area 11 (Otago), with 20 applications accepted, heads the enrolment lists for the district. Figures for the other areas at noon yesterday were as follows:—Area 9 (Marlborough, Nelson, Westland), 7; Area 10 (Canterbury), 15 and one officer; Area 12 (Southland), 6.
