WATERSIDE UNIONS AT WELLINGTON
AMALGAMATION PROPOSAL REJECTED
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 21. A vote taken last week on the Wellington waterfront on the question of amalgamation of the two waterside workers’ unions left the present system unchanged. Though the old casual waterfront workers’ union recorded a five to one majority for amalgamation with the Maritime Cargo Workers’ Union, about 350 members of the latter union abstained from voting. “The casual union was overwhelmingly in favour of amalgamation,” said the secretary (Mr D. S. Fraser) today, “but according to the law of the land, abstaining votes must be counted as votes against, so the amalgamation was lost.”
