LECTURE SERIES AT OXFORD
PROFESSOR A. N. PRIOR r OFFERED TASK FIRST INVITATION TO N.Z. PHILOSOPHER Professor A. N. Prior, professor of philosophy at Canterbury University College, has been invited to deliver the John Locke lectures at Oxford University early next year. Professor prior is the first New Zealander to receive such an invitation, which is rgpmled as a great honour in academic Named after the famous seventeenthcentury philosopher, John Locke, who was at Christ Church, Oxford, the series comprises a course of at least six lectures. The John Locke lecturer for this is Dr. Hao Wang, a distinguished United States logician. Professor Prior graduated from Otago University after having received his secoridary education at the former Wairarapa High School. His parents are Dr. N. H. Prior and Mrs Prior, ot Masterton. He has been a member of the staff of Canterbury University College since 1946, and has been professor of philosophy since the end of 1962. He is the author of several books and has contributed to learned journals published in Britain, the United States, and Sweden. His book, “Logic and the Basis of Ethics,” was published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford, and another book, ‘‘Formal Logic,” has been accepted by the same publishers. Die first congress of the New Zealand section of the Australasian Association for Psychology and Philosophy, held in Christchurch in 1953, was organised by Professor Prior. Last year, he was president ot the section and 1 delivered an address on “The Syntax of Time Distinction” at the congress held in Wellington.
