TROTTING LYNBERNE WINS CUP AT CHEVIOT CLUB’S MEETING

Lynberne, having his first start since , being trained at Belfast by C. S. Donald, caused a minor upset when he won the Cheviot Cup, the main race and first leg of the double at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting at the Rangiora racecourse on Saturday. Lynberne was always one of the leading division and he finished too well for Marshall Foi in the straight ta win well by more than a length. The racg for the Cheviot Cup was marred by the driverless Zulu’s Pride, which galloped through the field with nine furlongs to run. He was in front on the outside of Lynberne approaching the straight and for more than a furlong Lynberne’s driver, C. S. Donald, had to lean over and hold off Zulu’s Pride’s sulky. This effort added further to the merit of Lynberne’s win. 1 Raced by Mrs F. Stringer, of Oamaru, Lynberne is a four-year-old brother to the brilliant Rupee, one of the greatest juvenile pacers ever raced in New Zealand. Lynberne had shown very little stamina in his previous starts and the manner in which he ran on Saturday was most surprising. Now that he has struck form, he should carry on. In a pool of 22,5611 10s tickets on I the first leg of the double, 1694| were invested on Lynberne. Of these 350$ were reinvested on Reveille, which was bracketed with Legislate, winner of the second leg, the Rangiora Handi- ■ cap. The successful combination refl turned £53 4s for £l. I The racing throughout the day was I of a high standard and one of the best ■ performances was- returned by BarIravey, which beat a big field of trotters in the Southbrook Handicap, after conceding starts of up to 108 yards. It was an expensive win as far a * Barravey’s handicap goes, but he I will now be eligible to start at the Addington Easter meeting. Another smart effort was that of Kelso, winner of the Spotswood Handicap. He is trained by H. R. I Henderson for Mr P. A. Watson, of I Methven, and more will be heard of I him soon. | The meeting was held in perfect I weather before a good attendance. The track has seldom been in better order. Totalisator investments during the day amounted to £37,3Q5 10s. including £3141 10s nn. the double, compared I with £41,661 last year. i Lynberne’s Win Lynberne was always one of the leading division in the Cheviot Cup i I and he finished gamely under a vig- ' orous drive to win Well. The field ; was disorganised by Zulu’s Pride, which raced driverless for almost the ■ whole race. He went through the 1 I middle of the field with a round to go , and very few of the'field escaped in- . terference from him. Charlotte Bell i took over the lead at the end of half a mile from Marshall Foi and with • seven furlongs to run Count Grattan I moved round the field followed by the ‘ I driverless Zulu’s Pride, which was still i | hampering the leaders racing to the < ■ straight where Lynberne and Marshall 1 I Foi were in front, with Adan, Count 1 Grattan, Gold Direct and Double ’ Grattan handiest of the others. Lynberne was under a hard drive ( at the furlong where he was chai- 1 Ilenged by Marshall Foi. Their duel 1 J*® 8 short-lived, Lynberne responding ’ the better of the two to win well by ; a length and a half. I Marshall Foi was not disgraced as he broke in the back straight and was 1 hampered by Zulu’s Pride. He was < four lengths in front of Adan, which * WM never far away. Gold Direct , |2?’ lsbed J >n .. for f °urth, ahead of Double Grattan, with Silver Wood, < Twtan and Red Hackle next 1 Linda Bridget was among those to 1 lose their chances at the start. At ’ I Hie end of about half a furlong Gay . bra broke and came back on top °f Sir Roger and Zulu’s Pride, the last- . named losing his driver. L. O. I Charlotte Bell stopped with just under c naif a mile to run and soon after Command went clear to lead c “Wr Lmp and Stylish Grattan into } . atral ? bt At stage Flywheel. * S. 1 ? e: ' ry Count Grattan and S Silver Wood were handiest of the i others. Flywheel challenged inside 9 the furlong and, although driven right out, he could not bridge the gap to c Supreme Command, which had a 8 length to spare at the post. 11 Flywheel had every chance, but was not good enough on the day. Mighty ' Imp, which appeared to be hampered tor room, held on for third, a neck in » front of Stylish Grattan, with Cherry £ Queen and Silver Wood right up next, ?. cleyr at Count Grattan. ; Zulu’s Pride, Sir Roger, Tartan and j Sliver Wood gave ground at the start. Secerid Leg to Reveille £ Reveille, a good second to the prom- v ising Lady Belmer at Washdyke the V previous Saturday, gained a decisive 1: win in the seond leg of the double, . the Rangiroa Handicap. Toronto Boy , took over the running soon after the v

:e start and he set . a sound pace. There 5. was considerable scrambling in the n early rush for positions in this big n field and a number of horses, includ,e mg the favourite. MINOR EVENTS AT RANGIORA

PRESTBURY GAINS GOOD WIN Prestbury, after being a good way back at „ the straight entrance, finished too solidly for the opposition in the Domett Handicap at the Cheviot Trotting Club* meeting at Rangiora on Saturday. Mercury Light was the early leader, but at the end of three furlongs Ladas took control. He was joined by Mercury Light after passing the half-mile post, and they trotted clear of the field. Mercury Light broke with a furlong and a half to run, a ? d J4!J? a 8 was left eiBht lengths in front of Cottlesmore, which broke soon after, at the entrance. Lady Baffelan. Loyal Eagle and Prestbury were handiest of the others. Ladas was beaten early in the run home, and Lady Baffelan and then Loyal Eagle took the lead. They were run down over the last half-furlong by Prestbury, which won by two lengths. LoyaT Eagle trotted a fair race for second, half a length in front of Royal Mile, which showed great speed after meeting trouble several times in the running. Laay Baffelan tired in the run home, and one was half a length back fourth, ahead Of M ® rcur V Cottlesnioxe and With You (in a break) next. With You, Beehive, Lady Baffelan and Royal Mile were among those to make mistakes at the start: Royal Mile clipped a wheel of Sure Maggie* sulky with about two furlongs to run, and Sure Maggie was pulled up. She was not far away at the time and looked a likely placegetter. Scottish Laird Surprises Scottish Laird was always one of the leaders in the First Trial Handicap, and he held on in the straight to win by a nose from the fast-finishing Scoot. Floreate began best, and in the middle stages of the race she was closely attended oy Be Good. These two were beaten in the -back straight, and with four and a half furlongs to run Superior Globe, which had been at the rear of the leading bunch, raced round the field to take control. Scottish Laird closed on Superior Globe racing to the straight, and these two turned for home ahead of Scoot, Scottish Fair, Nippy Jean, Royal Leaf, and Silver Casket. Scottish Laird was clear at the furlong] and he looked in for an easy win until] Scoot pushed through the middle of the]

Local "Power lost a length or two at tne start, but he soon raced to the front setting a strong pace. The field bunched racing to the straight, where Sure King had moved up to be handy to Local Power. They were closely attended by pryden Led, Magic Bye, Snowball, Trojan. Kerry Star and Winning Power. Local Power was pacing well just inside th* furlong and looked in for a comfortable win until Snowbell, which had been conceding him a start of three lengths at the out . after hbn - Snowball finished on gamely, but failed by nail a head to catch Local Power. Sowball had every chance and responded well in the straight. She should, be an early winner. She was two lengths o£ sure King, which held off Magic Eye by a nose for third. Magic Eje ma y have been a little unlucky, as she ?^ ld P. ot *! et . a rt" l in the straight.
