LAND FOR MEMORIAL TO PIONEERS
OFFER TO MT. HERBERT COUNTY COUNCIL An offer from Miss Olive Redfern ito give an area of half an acre of [land at the intersection of the LyttelIton toad and Dyers Pasfc road at Gov-; j emor’s Bay was considered by the ! Mount Herbert County Council yes- ! terday. . A letter from Miss Redfern’s solicitors asked if the council was prepared ;to take over the area and develop it -• as a memorial reserve to the pioneers of !Canterbury. She was prepared to contriibute £6OO towards the cost, if she ap- | proved of the lay-out. The land, the : letter said, had been offered to the i Christchurch City Council in 1952. but it had been refused on the ground of ‘distance from the city. I Cr. D. Cressweil said he would like iauthority to see Miss Redfern’s solicitors. The £6OO might better be apI plied towards the proposed Governor's ;Bay community centre. He could not ,see. however, that the land would be much use as a site for the community | centre. j “I don't think it would be right for the council to make that suggestion,” ‘said Cr. W. J. Witte. • The chairman (Mr V. B. Jaggar) sugi gested that before committing itself, ‘the council should discuss the matter •with Miss Redfern's solicitors.
Mr jaggar and Crs. M. J. Foley and [Cressweil were appointed to see the ! solicitors.
