ROADS BOARD BUDGET
RECORD AMOUNT SET ASIDE
£13,982,000 FOR NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 18. A record amount of nearly £13,982,000 has been set aside by the National Roads Board for State and main highway construction and maintenance in the 1955-56 financial year. The sum exceeds by £2,600.000 the amount budgeted for in the year ending this month, which is more or less certain to be underspent. The Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) said the board had to overbudget each year, and what was not spent one year would be spent in the next. >
The chairman (Mr W. F. Young) said: “This year we are meeting all the requirements of the district roads ■ councils for the first time.” Mr W. A. Lee, chairman of the Counties Association: It will call their bluff. We will see whether they will be able to spend it all. That is what we have been looking for to give us continuity of work from year to year. It is a great step forward.
