LYTTELTON HARBOUR PROJECT
Sir, —It is clear from the discussions that have taken place that berthage space at Lyttelton and facilities for handling outward and bulk inward cargo are adequate for the foreseeable future. The only bottle-neck occurs with the sorting of general inward cargo. This bottle-neck has been created by men like “Progress” and his fellow tunnel road fanatics. Had it not been for the tunnel road agitation, the problem of providing adequate railway sorting sheds would hayp been tackled realistically and comparatively inexpensively long ago. It is significant that the criticism of the harbour scheme in the columns of your paper has come from men in responsible public positions, who are not afraid to sign their names. The supporters of the scheme are, very naturally, ashamed of themselves.— Yours, etc., C. T. WILLIAMS Kaiapoi, March 18, 1955.
