BONUS PAYMENT AT KAWERAU

CARPENTERS UNION OBJECTS (New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March I Officials of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union claim that the 6 ptf cent, bonus payment for workers the Kawerau newsprint project is contrary to union policy. The scheme began on Wednesday, February 16. The contractors, Fletcher, Merritt, Raymond, Ltd., say that the scheme will be scrapped entirely if it is not approved by all unions. Some 180 workers in 13 unions are involved in the proposed bonus payments, which total nearly £2OOO > week. Each worker was to get his bonus money—about £1 a week—when he left the firm’s employment. The New Zealand Carpenters Union delegate on the job signed the agreement after the mill-site carpenters voted for it. The union’s national secretary (Mr F. Langley, of Christchurch) Is coming north to discuss the question.
