TRACK TRIALS AT TRENTHAM

SOMERSET FAIR AND LINGUAL FIT “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, March 8. A Thompson. Handicap candidate. Lingual, took the honours at Trentham this morning in training for the opening day of the Wellington autumn meeting on Saturday. He recorded splendid time tor six furlongs on the plough. The champion three-yeaf-old, Somerset Fair, showed there is nothing wrong wile, his condition when he ran five furlongs with Idaho and Chattan. Others that drew attention to their prospects were Antiope, Peter Boy, Incomparable and’Toselli. Mainlander impressed over four hurdles. Galloping took place on the plough, which was heavy in places, and the outside of the course proper, where the going was perfect. On the plough, Lingual (McFarlane) completed six furlongs in Imin 17 2-sscc, the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. and the last three-furlongs in 37sec. He did ms work comfortably throughout. On the final day of the Wellington summer meeting. Lingual was a close third in the Thorndon Handicap, one mile. Since then he has finished third in the weight-for-age Jackson Stakes (to Golden Tan and Nottingham), and sixth in the Waimana Handicap at Masterton on Saturday. H? is in excellent condition, and should make a bold showing from iiis handy barrier position this week. The two-year-old Humber Hawk (Pcrawiti) galloped lazily, over three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. He has not fulfilled his early promise. The only other gallop on the plough was three furlongs by Lucky Instinct (Kirton) which recorded 37sec. She has not reproduced her training efforts on race days. . On Course Proper On the outside of the course proper, Somerset Fair (Bagby) and Idaho (Nuttall) were together, half a length ahead of Chattan (Biggs), at the end of five (uilongs in lmin 4sec, the last half-mile in 49 4-ssec, and the last three furlongs in 37sec.

Idaho made the early pace and finished full of running. He has never looked better. Somerset Fair was hanging making the home turn, but once straightened up ne came home strongly and could have bettered the time. He is in splendid order to maintain his unbeaten sequence in the North Island Challenge Stakes, which promises to be his hardest test to date. Chattan, as usual, worked well, but she has been found wanting too often to be recommended in the Thompson Handicap. Peter Boy (Barber) worked freely over five furlongs in lmin ssec. He ran from the half-mile in 51 2-ssec, and from the three furlongs in 37 3-ssec.

incomparable (Carbin) again did well when she galloped six furlongs in Imm 18sec, the last four in 51sec. Her latest track work has been of a high standard. On the straight six furlongs of the course proper, Antiope (G. Campbell) and Omar (Nuttall) were together over halt a mile till the last 50 yards, when Antiope drew ahead by three-quarters of a length. They ran the distance in 51 2-5 sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Antiope has developed well since she raced with distinction at the summer meeting Recovered From Injuries On the same course, Toselli (Carbtn) was galloping easily, a little more than a length clear of Jamassa (Perawiti), after running five furlongs in lmin 4sec, the last half-mile in 51sec. Toselli has recovered completely from the injuries he suffered on the eve of the Levin meeting. Hope (Wilkins) showed her customary brilliance to run half a mile in 50sec, tne last three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Harleston (Perawiti) and Shaun (McFarlane) were together throughout seven furlongs in lmin 32 4-ssec, the last four in 52 4-ssec, and the last three in 38sec. Harleston is a promising jumper, and is not without prospects in the Ngaio Hurdles. Shaun has done well since he raced at the Wellington summer meeting, and may be capable of a prominent showing in the Tinakori Handicap. He has shown his best form at Trentham. Poetical (Carbin) galloped freely over a mile in lmin 48sec, the last half in 51 3-5 sec, and the last three furlongs in 38sec. He was a disappointment at Masterton. Lucky dale (McFarlane) was not required to do his best while running three furlongs in 40 l-ssec.

Rare Charm (Ryder) was let off with an easy three furlongs in 43sec. She is small, but has shown promise in recent starts.

Working easily, Glenlee (Perawiti) completed half a mile in. 52 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. Visiting horses restricted to pacework were Gold Sieve, Crusoe Bay, and Papatoa.

Gold Sieve will be ridden by N. Eastwood in the North Island Challenge Stakes.

Mainlander (Forward) schooled brilliantly over four hurdles in the middle of the course. He has had only one race after a spell, but he has done plenty of schooling, and he will not be short of work when he attempts to win the Ngaio Hurdles for the second year in succession on Saturday.
