Japan Likely To Enter G.A.T.T.
(Rec. 11 pjn.) WASHINGTON, February 28. Japan today appeared virtually certain of winning membership in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, on the basis of official information reaching Washington from Geneva, a Reuter correspondent reported. Authoritative sources had said that Japan already seemed assured of the backing of a two-third majority of the 34 G.A.T.T. nations necessary to elevate Japan from its present association to full membership. United States trade experts said today that membership in G.A.T.T. would represent a signal victory for Japan in its world trade drive to balance its budget. These experts said that the United States, which had steadfastly backed Japan in its efforts to cut through tariff barriers barring the way to world markets, was simultaneously pushing ahead in Washington with a system of “triangular” trade plans to help Japan. These three-cornered trade arrangements were aimed at
encouraging big non-Communist nations, such as Britain, France, and Italy, to trade with Japan.
