RACING TRAINEE DISQUALIFIED
FOUND GUILTY OF NEGLIGENCE POSITIVE SWAB TAKEN FROM BRIGHT GEM (New Zealand Preu Atsociattan) AUCKLAND, February 24. A racehorse trainer, I. J. Tucker, of Takanini, was today disqualified for 12 months by the Auckland District Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference. The disqualification was ordered after a long inquiry into a positive swab taken from Bright Gem, the winner of the Bowen Handicap at Ellerslie on January 3. The committee found that strychnine had been administered to Bright Gem, and that Tucker was guilty of negligence in not having taken all proper precautions to prevent the administration of the drug. A charge against Tucker of corrupt practice was withdrawn. Bright Gem was disqualified for the race. A charge against B. A. Brien, a trainer, of having negligently failed to take proper precautions to prevent the administration of the drug to Bright Gem was dismissed, but the committee agreed to recommend to the New Zealand Racing Conference that Brien’s training licence be cancelled.
