RACING Brown Baron Chosen To Win Hurdles At Wingatui

F. Trilford, one of the most skilful trainers of jumpers in. the South Island, may successfully start Brown Baron on the road to hurdling fame on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Wingatui tomorrow. Brown Baron is in a °f for the Allanton Hurdles, the first race on the programme. A sound performer over middle distances, Brown Baron will be having his first race for the meeting, and his first since a bold finishing run carried him to victory in the high-weight at the recent Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. He is a five-year-old gelded son of Columcille, which has silked some top-class hurdlers, and it is almost certain that he will be well schooled for this test. Top weight of 11-8 will probably trouble ChaSemint, a winner last week, though possibly not so much as to keep him out of a place on a reasonably good track. Sivite, Ironside, and Military Chief will be making fresh starts, and something better should be seen of them later. Riverstone, winner of the last C.J.C. Lincoln Steeplechase, should be closer to race-winning condition. He has had two races since his spell, and his versatility has to be respected. He has successfully mixea hurdling and steeplechasing, but it is open to question whether he is yet ready to improve a very useful record. Spanish Chief knocked himself about in his race last week, and last-minute plans will probably be made for him. Royal Mail an Improver Royal Mail was a weakening sixth m the hurdle race last week. He has done little racing as a jumper, and is one of the improvers. Few, if any, in this field will match him for speed; and if his jumping is up to standard, speed could be the decisive factor. Export, a stablemate of Royal Mail, was a fair third last week, but he may be held by the useful Bafflas gelding Lacus, which was running on for second in the same race. A success for Riccarton in the Novice Handicap looks a possibility through Kiaree Beau, a three-year-old in A. J. Williams’s stable. Kiaree Beau has raced soundly during the last few weeks, and will probably run on more strongly than most of the others. He is 101 b below the consistent Invercargill filly Red Biretta, and at that difference he may do the better. Another that should be running on is Gay Mood. Two starts back he was placed in the high-weight at Winton —a creditable performance in a field containing some useful gallopers. Super Slipper, third in the corresponding race on the first day, has form that will give her a big following. It should not be difficult to have her well placed from the start. She will start from No. 6. Chance for Blue Count

Blue Count will be at short odds in the Dominion Handicap, a race that should give him the second success of his career for his Dunedin owner, Mr J. P. O’Brien. This smart Count Rendered colt beat the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner. Seven Seas, in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes the last time he raced on his home track, and he then raced three times at the Wellington Cup meeting, recording two thirds.

Red Elf, Renegade, and Jewel Royal, the first three in the race for two-year-olds last week, are again engaged. Red Elf led for the last three furlongs last week and won unchallenged.' A smart beginning from the No. 2 barrier position should keep her well to the fore all the way, though Blue

o»>nt may be the stronger finisher. X wide barrier position will not help Renegade, which may be mastered this time by the Orari-trained Jewel Royal, whose work this week has been attractive.

Of the beaten lot last week, none impressed more than the Invercargill-

trained Carron. She did well to finish fifth after striking trouble. The Washdyke-trained Ripon Wood has dwelt long on the path to winning form, but consistency will be well rewarded if she wins the Novice Handicap No. 2. She was nosed out by Artful King in one of the novice races last week after doing practically all the pacemaking. This time one of her strongest opponents will probably be Massador. a fair fifth last Saturday, two places behind Ripon Wood. Another will be Tulagi, also trained at Riccarton, and usually a bold finisher. Those below Massador in the weights are not a good lot. Gypsy Tap will probably do best of them, and his stocks will rise if there is any softening of the track. May Win Again Adversary and Princess Neptune, both Riccarton-trained gallopers, had the finish of the hack sprint to themselves last week. Adversary earping a half-length decision. Princess Neptune will meet Adversary on 51b better terms in the Mosgiel Handicap tomorrow, byt the result may not be any different. Adversary is well up to his weight of 9-7, and is expected to improve a good .record for Mr J. H. Smithers.

Rondel, winner of her last three races, will have a big following if she is at her best, but this Treasure Hunt mare has given her connexions some anxiety. The size of this field will end the chances of many runners from the start, but with any luck Dahlia, Pathe, Damper, and Silver Trumpet should have enough ability to put interest into the finish.

If she confirms earlier promise, Fleur ' should take beating in the distance hack race, the Farewell Handicap. She ’ was Glenlee’s only challenger in the ( New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton last i November, and her performance to run i the smart Trentham filly to half a length stamped her as a galloper which may take high ranking as a stayer. ; Last week, she had her first race since ; New Zealand Oaks day in the novice ; race. She had to go wide to put in ( her challenge, so her fourth was meri- ; torius. Moreover, improvement in her • condition from that race can reasonably be expected. Form in the distance hack races at Wingatui is usually consistent, and there will be every justification for ■ hopes of another sound performance by Lucky Bill, whose success last week was an effort of some merit. Patns and Landon both raced well enough laast week to be given god chances, but they may not fare any better than Wise Belle and Cornflake, both newcomers at the meeting. Wise Belle runs this distance out very strongly, and her fourth over a , mile and a quarter at Gore on February 5 may have indicated an early win. Cornflake was runner-up to Decisive in the mile Dotiro Handicap at Trentham last month, and a test more stamina produced a second to Goldwyn over a mile and a quarter, at Riccarton on February 5. If he is at or near his best on the day, Cornflake should safely measure up to the class. Selections: — 11 a.m.—Allanton Hurdles: Brown Baron, Lacus, Royal Mail. 11.45 a.m. —Novice Handicap No. 1: Kiaree Beau, Red Biretta, Gay Mood. 12.30 p.m.—Wingatui Handicap: Josudi, Naval Treaty, Ballast. 1.15 p.m.—Dominion Handicap: Blue Count, Red Elf, Jewel Royal. 2 p.m.—Novice Handicap, No. 2: Ripon Wood, Massador, Tulagi. 2.45 p.m.—March Handicap: My Friend, Sure Swift, Strato. 3.30 p.m.—Mosgiel Hack Handicap: Adversary, Pathe, Princess Neptune. 4.15 p.m.—Farewell Hack Handicap: Fleur, Cornflake, Lucky Bill. TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI ADVERSARY IN GOOD FORM “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, February 24. Adversary, top-weight in the Mosgiel Handicap, was one of the most impressive gallopers at Wingatui this morning, when the final trials were held for the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. Others to show up were Bottine, Lo Night, Copperfield, Danger Point, Gay Mood, Field Dress, and Flyting. Currie) had the measure of Twin Jet (G. A. Campbell) and could have improved on his narrow advantage at the end of five furlongs in Imin 6 1-5 sec, the last three furlongs in the smart time of 40 4-ssec. The trial was one of the best of the 1 « rn ? l l g \ l _ was held aft er rain had affected the track. It was a good effort for- Twin Jet, which may miss her engagement in the hack sprint because of her wide barrier draw. jj The early work was held in ideal conditions. The track was in splendid order, with dust rising in the straight, but there was a sudden change in the weather about 8 a.m., and most of the later trials were * n _ s^ eady x? in ‘ , The S° in g became greasy. The weather had cleared before midday, and sunshine and drying wind in the aftermad.e a big difference to the track, c * th S re n ?j I J? or £ raln » the going on Saturday should be firm. No scratchings have been received, but said that Exodus was an unlikely starter in the Wingatui Handicap. Spanish Chief has not pleased his trainer, and may jniss the Allanton Hurdles. If he does not start, L. G. White will ride Some Bounder.

Early Work One of the best performances before the rain was recorded by the maidens, Bottine (B. R. Thomson) and Lo Night (J. W. Meikle), which recorded a sound trial over six furlongs in Imin 21see, the first three furlongs in the smart time of 37 3-5 sec. Both horses finished strongly. Evening Shoes (N. Hewitt) finished on to hold Reformed (G. W. Julius) over the same ground in Imin 22 3-ssec, the last half mile in 56 3-ssec.

Gay Mood (N. Hewitt) recorded the best half mile of the morning to beat Girleen (J. Culvin) by a length and a half tn 52sec, the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec. Gay Mood was impressive. His companion, which is to resume racing at the Cromwell meeting, galloped well in her first trial for some time.

The two-year-olds Neptona (B. Blair) and Free Trade (J. D. Pankhurst) ran the first furlong in 12 3-ssec, and finished on terms at the end of half a mile in 55 4-ssec. Field Dress (N. Hewitt) was well clear of Cass (H. J. Powell), after five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec. Field Dress was going easily, and finished strongly to run out the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Josudi completed a mile of pace work by running the last three furlongs in 44 2-ssec. Copperfield (L. W. Hare) and Danger Point (G. A. Campbell) finished in line, with a length to Wait-a-Bit (A. I. Powell), at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 2-5 sec. They ran the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Rain Affects Track Heavy rain fell during this gallop, and the horses were almost obscured running down the back. The following trials were held after the rain had affected the track. Exodus (D. N. Hadfield) and Field Chief (B. D. Cunningham) ran the opening half-mile in 52 l-ssec and were together at the end of seven furtongs in Imin 36 3-ssec. Ballast (T. I. Smith) came away from Balveine (B. E. Kennedy) in the run to

S e o P = s l to be f °ur lengths clear in Imin e P d of . seven furlongs. They did their best work over the early stages and ran the opening half-mile in oi z-osec. The Bruiser (D. WiUman) worked well alongside Trinidad (P. H. Stock) to complete seven furlongs in Imin 38 2-ssec, the first half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Strato (P. H. Stock) ran an easy five furlongs in Imin 11 ’2-ssec, the first two in 27 2-ssec. Fleur (G. Currie), with an advantage in the weights, shaded Artful King (J. D. Pankhurst) and Bon Soir (A. J. Williams) in a sprint from the three furlongs in 42 2-ssec, alter a mile of strong pace work c °unt (L. W. Hare) shaded Cord (G. Hansen) after dashing over three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Verbill (G. Hansen) covered the first two furlongs in the smart time of 24 4-ssec. but was easing up at the end of five furlongs in Imin Bsec. Algiers (L. W. Hare) and Ma Heine (D. N. Hadfield) ran the first furlong in 12 2-ssec and were not ridden out to complete half a mile in 54 2-ssec. This time was equalled by Landon (G. Hansen). Massador (R. Humphries) shaded Tulagi (T. I. Smith), which is not a good track worker, in 55 2-ssec. the first furlong in 13 2-ssec. The two-year-olds, Jewel Royal (D. Willman) and Renegade (B. E. Kennedy), ran the first furlong in 12 l-ssec, and were going easily on terms to finish half a mile in 55 3-ssec. On the Plough The Balloch mare. Flyting (H. T. Anderton), which is to have her first race in the Novice Handicap No. 1, ran half a mile on the plough in 51 2-ssec, after taking 13sec for the opening furlong. She had a big advantage in the weights to hold Count Simper (B. J. Anderton) by a length and a half, with Export (B. R. TOomspn) two lengths back, and another three lengths to Kilmacrenan (Ji. Wadsworth).

Blue Robe (S. Harrington) jumped well oyer two hurdles, and Royal Mail (B. H. Thomson) completed a similar task well. Some Bounder (B. R. Thomson' shaped well pver four flights of hurdles. Lacus (B. D. Cunningham) was schooled later, when the going was greasy, and lost his rider when he slipped into the first fence. He jumped two fences carefully, and was then sent over seven furlongs with Wise Belle (A. N. Didham). They ran the first three furlongs in 42sec and completed the distance in Imin 28 2-ssec.
