PLASTIC DESIGN OF A PITCHED PORTAL ROOF—The structure of this roof for a garage in Tuam street was the subject of a paper by Mr I. L. Holmes to the New Zealand Institution of Engineers in Christchurch yesterday. The plastic design, using new principles for the first time in New Zealand, enables lighter members to be used without trussing, and subsequent research has shown that it will carry loads even greater than previously expected.
