SUPPORT FOR LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD PROJECT
Sir,-—Mr P. J. Mowat has overlooked two fundamentals, so esential in a local body member—loyalty to his board and his duty to his constituents. The Harbour Board almost unanimously decided in favour of Lyttelton’s port project. He was the only dissentient. It is inconceivable that that decision would have been made, unless its supporting members (all men of sound judgment) were firmly convinced that all in the Lyttelton harbour district would benefit, either directly or indirectly, from the scheme. Once that forthright decision was made ; it was up to Mr Mowat either to abide by it or resign. He also failed in his duty to his constituents by advocating a link-up with Timaru, before he himself had made even a cursory investigation of that port’s very debateable future. Apparently he has never inspected the dire shingle threat to that port, now so obvious at the end of Timaru’s breakwater.— Yours, etc., PROGRESS. February 24, 1955.
