HAMMOCKS FOR BOMBER CREW

U.S. Innovation In B-47 Strato jet

(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 19. The Air Force was installing hammocks in its B-47 Stratojet bombers, Hanson Baldwin, military correspondent of the “New York Times” reported today. The B-47 carries a crew of only three of four and has cruised as long as 47 hours.

The cockpit was too small for a regular bunk, so the Air Force has devised a collapsible hammock-like bed that was gigged up between the pilot’s and co-pilot’s seat, Baldwin reported. The fliers had described it as a “strato-bunk” or “strato-sack.” Baldwin said the Air Force also had tested a heat vibrator which would help to ease and massage weary thigh and leg muscles during long flights. It was designed also to stimulate the flow of blood at high altitudes and in cramped conditions.
