N.Z. TRADE WITH JAPAN
Imports Of Consumer Goods Opposed BRITISH BUSINESSMAN’S ADVICE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 14. New Zealand should buy capital goods, such as hydro-electric equipment. from Japan, and not consumer goods, Mr Cyril Lord, a British textile magnate, said at Auckland today. “Why should you sell raw materials to Japan to put people in Lancashire out of work?" he asked. “You sell wool to Japan, and buy back manufactured articles. “I believe Britain should buy all your surplus exports, but if it is necessary to trade with Japan, we—and New Zealand too—should buy back capital equipment that will increase our assets. “You’re in need of plant to generate electric power. There is a lag in delivery from Britain. Why can’t Japan send this heavy capital equipment?" Mr Lord said he agreed with New Zealand manufacturers that Japanese goods were coming through Hong Kong under British labels, but said he could not convince the British Board of Trade of this.
