MALAYA
Sir. —I do not believe the sending of squadrons of fighters, or bombers, or of any military description, -can be a contribution to the maintenance of peace and security in South-east Asia, and Mr Holland’s statement is a mere play of words and cannot have any true meaning. Who would say New Zealand occupied by military forces from Finland, Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Italy, Japan, Peru, etc., would have a greater sense of security and peace? Mr Holland’s knowledge of human beings cannot be realistic enough or he could not, with any stretch of imagination, say that thewno-nuclear weapons will make war less rather than more likely. For man controlled by fear cannot be expected to restrain his actions indefinitely. The present thinking in military terms is purely the end result of economic measures resorted to in Malaya.—Yours, etc., F. H. ENGELBRECHT, Oxford, February 13, 1955.
