POPULATION OF NEW ZEALAND
INCREASE OF 15,905 IN THREE MONTHS The population of New Zealand on December 31 was 2,118,485, including 130,806 Maoris. These figures are contained in a statement released by the Government Statistician (Mr G. E. Wood). The population included 1,065,511 men (66,946 of them Maoris) and 1,052,974 women of whom 63.860 were Maoris. “Since September 30, 1954, the population has shown an increase of 15,905,” said Mr Wood. “Natural increase (excess of births over deaths) accounted for 9592, and migration and the movement of armed forces personnel showed that arrivals in New Zealand exceeded departures by 6313. For the same period of 1953, natural increase accounted for 9414 of the total increase of 14,092, and arrivals exceeded departures by 4678. “The above figures exclude island territories and the trust territory of Western Samoa. Latest available population of these areas is as follows:—Gook Islands, 15,657 at March 31, 1954; Niue Island, 4763 at September 30, 1954; Tokelau Islands, 1795 at September 30, 1954; and Western Samoa, 93,247 at September 30, 1954,” Mr Wood said.
