TESTS IN DECEMBER AND JANUARY MORE FAULTY SAMPLES REPORTED The standard of milk supplied in Christchurch deteriorated between December, 1954, and January this year, if the tests conducted by the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board’s sampling officer are a reliable guide. Of 450 samples analysed in December, 21 failed to pass the four-hour reductase test, and three failed to pass the test for solids other than fat. In January, 403 samples were analysed, 22 failing in the reductase test and 11 m the solids test. All samples in both months passed the test for fats. In December, 16 of the Christchurch Milk Company’s samples taken from the company’s Barbadoes street, Sydenham, and Spreydon dairies failed to pass the reductase test. From the same dairies, 12 samples failed to pass the reductase test, and four failed to pass the solids test in January, when 216 samples were analysed. The Christchurch Milk Company’s Harewood dairy had 63 samples analysed in December, and five failed to pass the reductase test. In January 54 samples were analysed, 10 failing in the reductase test and three in the solids test. houses of Wright’s Metropolitan Milk Company (Russley road) and of Mr C. Chappell (Stourbridge street) passed all tests in both months. Three of the 42 samples Jx a r £ om the milk treated by Mr W. M. Duncan (Bower avenue) in December were deficient in solids content, and four of the 38 January samples were similarly deficient. In December, 21 samples of cream were taken from each of two treating houses—the Christchurch Milk Company's and Wright’s. Six of the samples from Wright’s failed to pass the fat test and three failed in the reductase test. The figures for the other company were one and nil respectively. Nineteen cream samples were taken in January from each treating house. Five from Wright’s were deficient in fat content, and three failed the reouctase test. One of the Christchurch Milk Company's samples was deficient in fat content, and one did not come up to the reductase standard.
