UPSETS IN FIRST CUP ROUND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 6 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 13. Warrington, Huddersfield, and Wigan were among the mighty fallen in the first round of the English Rugby League Cup yesterday. Warrington was without its Australian goal-kicking star Harry Bath, who is recovering from influenza, and with Brian Bevan well marked, lost 9-4 at Bradford. The New Zealander -‘Brian Nordgren missed two penalties for Wigan and his side lost 5-2 at Oldham. The New Zealand three-quarters, Peter Henderson, opened the scoring for Huddersfield with his fortieth try of the season, but Leeds rallied at Headingly and won 8-3. The biggest winning margin was recorded by Workington, which beat a Yorkshire junior club, Dewsbury Central, 43-0. Tony Paskins, the centre threequarters, kicked five goals and his Australian colleague, Johnny Mudge, scored one of the 11 tries. The former Leeds captain, Arthur Clues, another Australian, has played a big part in Hunslet’s revival. He scored a try in his ide’s 43-10 win at Whitehaven yesterday. The first appearance of the former Rochdale “flyer,” Wally McArthur, for Blackpool Borough, drew nearly 7000 people to Keighley. But McArthur kicked enly one goal and Blackpool lost 17-8. After leading for the first weeks, Brian Bevan has been displaced in a newspaper ballot to find the. player of the year. His team-mate, Gerry Helme, is now in top position with 8707 votes, Bevan has 8701, and Nordgren follows with 8342.
