Wool Values In Australia
(Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 14. The values for merinos, comebacks, and crossbreds were very firm at the Sydney wool sales today, compared with last week’s closing rates. Competition was keen, with the Continent. Japan, Britain, Eastern Europe, and Australian mills leading the buying. Of 13.012 bales offered, 12.900 were sold. Crossbred prices were:—good 60/64’s, 93d; good 58’s. 91d: good 60’s, 92d; good 56’s. 77d; good 50’s, 71d; good 46’s, 64d. The Melbourne wool sale market was fully firm on rates established at other centres last week. Competition was keen and widespread. The Continent headed buying, with fair support from Britain. American interest was more noticeable than at earlier sales, and there was good bidding from Japan and Australian mills. There was an almost full clearance of the total offered, 14,700 bales. Crew of Trawler Rescued*-— All the crew of 18 of the French trawler, St. Pierre Eglise (222 tons), were saved when she went aground in heavy seas on the Norfolk coast today. Some got ashore in a small boat, others jumped overboard and waded through the breakers, and seven were rescued by breeches buoy.—London, Feb. 13.
