CURFEW AT FREETOWN

Strikers Clash With Police (Rec. 10 p.m.) FREETOWN, Feb. 12. Sierra Leone authorities clamped an all-night curfew on Freetown today after fights between police and strikers in which seven men, including a European police officer, had been killed. The police went into action with a bren gun this afternoon after reports of arson and looting. The strikers stoned a European police officer to death and six Africans were reported killed in a pitched battle in Freetown last night. The officer, Assistant Superintendent W. H. Everitt, was said to have been wounded by stones as he led an attack against riotersFreetown, in the grip of the four-day strike, by the Artisans and General Workers’ Union, was like an armed camp today, with battles still going on in various parts of the town. The Army has been called in and special constables have been enrolled to shift the rioters from their road blocks. The water supply to the city has also been sabotaged. The police station in the eastern part of the town was burned down after a heavy attack. All shops are closed and shuttered following a night of looting. The union is demanding a wage increase of lOd a day. It has been offered 6d.
