RUGBY PARK MEETING

R. L. GASKELL RUNS GOOD 440YDS With about 40 of the province’s best athletes competing against Wellington on .Saturday, fields for the inter-club meeting at Rugby Park were again patchy, but there were some encouraging performWinning the senior 440 yards handicap from scratch in 50.9 sec, R. L. Gaskell (Techical) ran the fastest time of the season by a local athlete. The Empire Games champion, D. Jowett (Otago), is the only one who has run faster on Rugby Park this season. He ran 49.45ec at the triangular interprovincial tourney in December. Giving away up to 32 yards, Gaskell was up with the leaders after 230 yards. He won by 10 yards. A much improved runner is N. Fleming (Polytechnic). Leading all the way, he won the junior A grade two miles in lOmin 28.8 sec, an improvement of Bsec on his-previous best, made two weeks ago. Now 18, Fleming will be junior for the coming harrier season, and he looks likely to develop into one of the province’s •leading junior cross-couhtry runners. Another promising run was that by D. Reece (Technical) in the under 17 grade, one mile and a half. Reece won by a good margin in 7miri 45.65ec. Mrs D. May (University) took a double, winning the 100 yards in 11.7 sec and the 220 yards in 26.55ec. Senior events were handicap and junior and women’s events were scratch.
