BOWLS H. DEAVOLL WINS OPEN SINGLES TOURNAMENT

Further rounds in the Christchurch Bowline Centre's open singles and pairs tournament were decided on Saturday at the Edgeware green. The singles was won by H. Deavoll (Belfast), who beat W. Cogswell (Linwood) 20-11 in the final. The pairs could not be finished as some of the players were still in both the singles and pairs. The finalists are G. Rowe (Opawa) and J. Huddleston (Mount Pleasant).

Conditions were good when play began in the morning, but the green was holding a little in the early rounds. However, the warm sun soon dried out the moisture and in the afternoon the green was. playing reasonably fast. The absence of any wind gave the drawing players a great advantage over those who were not so steady, and any mistakes or bad bowls were entirely the fault of the player. No players entered the last few rounds of the singles with two lives and of the three games played in the ninth round only one was close. This was the game between Deavoll and A Rennie (Canterbury). On the eighth end Deavoll led 7-5, and Rennie stayed on five for the next four ends while Deavoll increased his score to twelve Rennie had not scored well, and at the sixteenth end was 16-6 down, but from there he came on and scored nine over the next four ends to be 16-15 down with one head to play On this DeavoU took a single to win in an exciting finish 17-15. * n an W. Cogswell had no difflculty in his game against C. H. Manning (Papanui), and held a commanding lead throughout the game. On the twelfth end he led 18-4, and was 25-10 up on the eighteenth when the game finished In the semi-final between Cogswell and Common, Common let Cogswell score a three at a vital stage of the game and with four heads left to play Common required six to tie. He would get only two singles on the next two heads, and with CogsweU taking a single on the next. Common conceded the game with one head to play, 22-17. In the final between Deavoll and CogsweU two very different types of play were seen. Cogswell favoured the short head, and Deavoll as long a head as possible. Deavoll was much steadier than Cogswell and scored on the short as well as the long head CogsweU took a single on the first head, and DeavoU scored six on the next three, and further increased his lead to be up 10-3 on the eighth. Over the next three heads Cogswell took • two tw .° sin Sl« to bridge the m a little, but Deavoll, who was playing with great accuracy, soon breught his score up to be 14-7 up on the fourteenth head. CogsweU now had to took for points and m trying to get on top had the run of luck against him. Often when trying to buUd up his score on the head he would turn one of DeavoU's bowls in for shot. Cogswell wae playing an uphUl game aU the time and on the eighteenth head he was 19-8 down. With a two on the next he had to score a possible on the

Vaughan, who was toe . la pt skip with two lives, was eliminated when he lost this game, having lost his first life in his previous game. r The other semi-final between Huddleston and Findlay was a rather one-sided one with Huddleston keeping in front all the time. Huddleston went away to a fine lead and was 12-4 up on the ninth end. On the sixteenth end he still held a commanding lead, being 16-9 up. Findlay reduced this lead by two over the next two ends, but a three to Huddleston on the next put him further in - front.
