LIFE SAVING

CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDED SUMNER WINS KESTEVEN CUP The Canterbury surf life-saving championships were concluded at Taylor’s Mistake on Saturday and Sunday in perfect weather and a moderate surf. Large crowds attended on both days. The main trophy contested was the Kesteven Cup. (six-man rescue and resuscitation). It was won by the Sumner club, which scored a meritorious win with fine swimming by J. Stewart (patient) and W. Pasley, a former New Zealand representative (beltmqn). The second heat in the contest provided a very close finish, the first three teams being separated by only half a point, with the fourth team only half a point behind. Sumner was second in the senior fourman alarm final and provided the first three place-getters in the senior surf ski race. New Brighton A, holder of the Black and White Cup (senior surf relay), again won the cup. The club has been undefeated since 1938—a remarkable performance. Its team consisted of N. C. Chambers, R. Henry, and J. Ryan. A feature of the week-end was the fine performance by Waimairi junior teams, which finished second for the season in the junior championship. This is the club’s first season in any strength with juniors. Waimairi was also unbeaten in all races for the senior and junior surf canoe titles. Keen competition developed in the junior surf teams’ championship, and positions changed rapidly as competitors ran up the beach to the finishing line. Taylor’s Mistake and New Brighton, which tied for first place, finished Well, ahead of other teams. P. R. Garratt (Taylor's Mistake) in his last season as a junior, had comfortable wins on both days of the junior surf races. He was followed in both events by B. Robertson (New Brighton) and J. Hunter (Taylor’s Mistake). The championship pennant was again won by New Brighton, and its junior teams also won the junior championship.
