QUARANTINE
Sir,—Contacts with measles are now no longer required to observe any quarantine. Does this apply to all infectious diseases? If so. how are we to protect our children from these infections and their possibly severe aftereffects?—Yours, etc., THOUGHT FOR OTHERS. Ashburton, February 3, 1955. [“The Department of Health bases its control of infectious disease on generally accepted modern practice,” said the District Medical Officer of Health (Dr. D. P. Kennedy) when this letter was referred to him. “In the case of measles, quarantine of contacts is required for children, except when the disease is epidemic,” he said. “This is because the patient is infectious four to five days before the appearance of a rash. Generally, infectious diseases are controlled by the provisions of the Infectious and Notifiable Diseases Regulations, 1948, which provide isolation or quarantine as is appropriate.”]
