BRITAIN’S AIMS ON FORMOSA
“First To Stop The Fighting” (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 26.
Britain’s first concern was to stop the fighting in the Formosa Straits area and to that end was actively discussing with the United States and New Zealand ways of achieving an end to hostilities, the British delegate to the United Nations, Sir Pierson Dixon, said today. Sir Pierson Dixon said Britain’s purpose was simply to preserve the peace of the world.
His remarks on the Formosan situation came in a departure from the prepared text of an address he made to the annual luncheon of the Pilgrims of the United States.
“We are all at this moment greatly concerned aboqt the fighting in the area of the Formosa Straits.” said Sir
“It has been, and it is. the first concern of my Government to stop the fighting in this potentially dangerous area.”
Turning tp Mr 1 Holland, the New Zealand Prime Minister, who was also a guest at the luncheon. Sir Pierson Dixon said.
“With this in mind my Government is actively discussing with the United States and with your Government, Mr Prime Minister, ways and means of achieving this. “Our purpose is peace—there are no hidden intentions. Our aim is simply to stop the hostilities and preserve the peace of the world.” In his prepared speech, Sir Pierson Dixon said that there were vast areas where new nations were for the first time exercising national sovereignty.
Americans Seeking China Passports
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 26. The State Department is still considering three passport applications from relatives who wish to accept Communist China’s offer to visit the United States airmen imprisoned in China as spies.
A spokesman said the department’s attitude to the applications was that it could not encourage travel to a country where the normal diplomatic protection could not be offered.
He declined to predict whether or not the applications would be granted finally.
