AUSTRALIAN TEAM AT GREYMOUTH

WEST COAST FIFTY-YARD RECORD EQUALLED (From Out Own Reporter)

A , GREYMOUTH, Jan. 26. A large crowd saw the visiting Australian swimmers in action at the Greymouth Municipal Baths. The Australian Universities’ 12-man team, with Rob Heming as the star attraction, delighted the spectators with their swimming. Heming equalled the West Coast 50 yards freestyle record of 24.45ec, set up by Clarke Showles, the Olympic champion, m the baths in 1953. The Australian, D. Campbell, won the 100 yards open backstroke from Miss B. Reece, of Hokitika, with Heming in third place. Cliff Shaffron, Sydney University diving champion, delighted the crowd with an exhibition.

A brief exhibition of water polo tactics was given by Jake Foster, the Australian team captain, who is considered one of the best exponents of the game m the world.

B. Dutton (Australia) won the open 220 yards freestyle B division from Miss V. Wesley. A. Bowes finished first, but was disqualified.

H. Hughes won the A division event S or V., D ; Campbell (Australia) and Miss V. Wesley. R. Leak., won the open 100 yards breaststroke from Miss H. Zampese (Hokitika) and A. Peters;

The senior and intermediate men’s handicap event, over 50 yards, was wen by H. Weld (Australia) from two other Australians, Heming and I. McCallum, who dead-heated for second place. The intermediate and senior women’s 100 yards freestyle was won bv P. Finnerty from A. Finnerty and D? McLean. R. Heming (Australia) won the intermediate and senior 100 yards freestyle from H. Hughes in 57sec.

A. Fipnerty won the 50 yards intermediate and senior women’s freestyle handicap from J. Lowe and P. Finnerty.
