G. ROWLING WINS MEN’S TITLE

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 27. The title-holder, C. A. Watkins (Hastings), was beaten in straight games by G. Rowling (Nelson) in the men’s championship final at the national croquet tournament today.

Miss I. Wainwright (Hamilton) accomplished a triple peel in her open championship match against C. T. Wadsworth (Auckland). It was the first triple peel by a woman in the national tournament for many years, and the first Miss Wainwright had done in a Dominion event. Results:—

Men’s Championship.—Final: G. Rowling (Nelson) beat C. A. Watkins (Hastings). 26-17, 26-24.

Championship Doubles.—Second life—second round: Miss M. Claughton (Wellington) and Mrs B. Jarden (Wellington) beat Mesdames Bradley and Hamilton (Auckland) by default. Third round: Miss Claughton and Mrs Jarden beat Mesdames E. Munro (Auckland) and J. Fielding (Paeroa), 26-18. Women’s Championship.—Mrs G. Molloy (Opotiki) beat Mrs Fielding (Paeroa), 26-11, 26-14; Mrs C. Watkins (Hastings) beat Miss I. Wainwright (Hamilton), 13-26, 26-9, 26-23; Mrs A- Rawlinson (Methven) beat Mrs P. Hawke (Hamilton), 26-1, 26-14; Mrs H. Fenwick (Auckland) beat Mrs J. Lockett (Wanganui), 26-12, 26-19.
