ATKA HELICOPTER CRASHES IN ANTARCTIC
(Rec. 11 0.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 24. One of the helicopter pilots with the United States Navy’s Antarctic expedition was killed on Saturday in a crash at Kainan Bay, the “New York Times” reported today. The pilot, Lieutenant John Moore, had just taken off from the ice plateau surrounding Kainan Bay when the helicopter plunged back to the surface. A Along with the expedition’s two other helicopters, Lieutenant Moore had been ferrying observers and scien-
tists to the plateau from the expedition’s ship, the Atka. . Those nearby on the plateau rushed to the wrecked helicopter and removed Lieutenant Moore, who was alive but unconscious. One of the shore
party’s sledges was used as a litter. It was lashed to the pontoon of a second helicopter, and Lieutenant Moore was flown back to the Atka.
The ship’s surgeon, Lieutenant Murray Kahn, worked for several hours to save Lieutenant Moore, but he died without regaining consciousness.
