A clear-cut definition of where the United States stood in relation to Formosa was “imperative,” the “New York Times” said in a leading article today. , , Referring to today’s special message from the President to Congress on Formosa, the newspaper said: “If any appearance of indecision on our part has contributed to uneasiness or tension in the Far East that condition can be improved by a forthright declaration of intent and purpose. “It goes without saying that such a statement of purpose will reiterate that we are not prepared to compromise the national interest. We can also~make it plain that we will not abandon friends and allies.” The New York “Herald Tribune” said: “A clear restatement of the American commitment to defend Formosa, and a clear indication that the commitment is limited to that defence, should be an important step toward a cease fire ”
