RACING Idaho And Redcraze Win Main Races At Trentham
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, January 24. i Idaho, a failure in the major handicap races earlier at the Wellington Cup meeting, recaptured winning form in tiie Trentham Stakes today. At The finish was one of the best of the meeting, Idaho just getting there from Lovely Bouquet and the Weltington Cup winner. Golden Galleon. Ray Ribbon, the only three-year-old in the field of five, and the favourite, dropped away in the last half-furlong, after attempting to lead all the way. Idaho was carefully nursed for his final run by K. A. Nuttall, who has won the Canterbury Cup twice on Mrs H. W. Lyda’s Trentham-trained four-year-old Tlmanova horse. Redcraze, winner of the mile January Handicap on Saturday, shone as a stayer in the Summer Handicap. Redcraze was a chance mount for the Auckland horseman, G. F. Hughes, who had the Woodville-trained Red Mars gelding close to the lead all the way. Finite, the Wellington Racing Club Handicap winner on Saturday, got closest to Redcraze at the end, but he wm safely held by three-quarters of a length. Poetical, which, like Redcraze, is owned by Mr J. B. Bradley, of Fefldjng, battled on for third, after attemptthc Mr Bradley bred the winner, and bought Poetical «s a yearling. ,- Redcraze-Poetical bracket car“tickets in a doubles pool of £90,463 ss, and 1089} were redeemed on tiie imported Kingsway mare, Denounce, which snatched victory from • Dollar in the last few strides m the second leg, the City Handicap. The double was worth £137 5s for £l. The weather was fine and the track hard and fast. The on-course total isator turnover for the day was £226,625, compared with £241,904 last year. The total for the meeting was £644,149. Last year’s total was £665,253 10s. The Trentham Stakes
Idaho came strongly from the trailing pomtidn to master Golden Galleon in the last stride for Trentham Stakes honours. Lovely Bouquet came strongly down on the outside of Idaho for second by a head. It was a thrilling finish. Three lengths back, Ray Ribbon tired into fourth placing, after attempting to lead all the way. None of the older horses appeared likely to take over pacemaking early, so W. D. Skelton took Ray Ribbon through to the front to ensure that they would have to carry their weight a U the way. After a furlong he was a length clear of Fox Myth and Golden Galleon, .the latter moving into second place going to the mile. At this stage Idaho was racing on the inside of Fox Myth, a length and a half back, and a length clear of Lovely Bouquet. Golden Galleon was taken forward to join Ray Ribbon five and a half furlongs from home, and they entered the last half-mile still with a lead of a length from Idaho and Fox Myth. That was how thev came to the straight. Golden Galleon was shading Ray Ribbon early in the run home, and Sk ®}ton drew his whip soon after. The Perilous colt responded gamely, but he had soon reached the end of his run. x Galleon was immediately tackled by Idaho zknd Lovely Bouquet, which both got up to shade the Wellington Cup winner in a first-class finish, one reminiscent of the finish to this race last year, when Idaho appeared a shade unlucky. Redcrase Wins Decisively
Redcraze followed his bracketed mate. Poetical, round the home turn in the Summer Handicap, reached the front near the furlong, and ran the race out strongly to beat Finite by three-quarters of a length. .Poetical battled on for third, half a neck back, and three-quarters of a length clear of the fast-finishing Toparoa. Poetical ran to the front inside the first furlong, and Redcraze was in one of tile trailing positions from the start Redcraze had the favourite, Clinker, alongside him most of the way, but the top-weight reached the end of his run on the turn. Finite was close behind Redcraze on the turn, and, as usual, finished solidly. Poetical kept g loing gamely in the, straight. By lasting for third, he gave supporters of the Redcraze-Poetical bracket a good place dividend. Toparoa, one of the tail-enders startting tiie last half-mile, finished boldly for fourth, just beating Sir William which was running on under a hard ride. Deceptive was a length back, sixth, with Golden Arch alongside. Swift Gold was next, and was followed in by Hy-Spin, Royal Script, Clinker, The Wake and Ballast. Sprint ta Denounce Denounce, a failure over six furlongs in the Telegraph Handicap on the first day of the meeting, finished a shade better than the Wlngatuitrained Mighty Dollar for the honours in the City Handicap, the second leg of the double. Denounce was one of the tail-enders at the end of a furlong and a . half, but Mighty Dollar was in closer touch with the leaders all the way. Gonfanon, Hush Money, Lucrative and Japonica were in front early. Leaving the chute to join the course proper. Lucrative, Japonica and Gonfanon led Mighty Dollar, with Illusionist handy and Hush Money weakening wider out.
Mighty Dollar reached the front just outside the furlong, and looked, the winner for a moment, but Denounce kept up a powerful run on the inside
and mastered him a stride or two from the post Nelson’s Blood finished solidly from the ruck for third, two lengths back. She just caught Japonica, and Hlusionist was three-quarters of a length further back, fifth. Then there was a length to Lucrative, and a nose to Papatoe, which was followed in by Strato, Gonfanon, Baby Dakar, and Hush Money. Results:—
