Davis Achieves Ambition With 147 Snooker Break
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON. January 22. Joe Davis, Britain's champion snooker player, made the maximum break of 147 to set a new world record and achieve his life’s ambition at Leicester Square Hall. London, today. Playing against Willie Smith, Davis, who has twice made breaks of 146 for the previous record, took 15 reds, 15 blacks, and al) the colours to complete the coveted maximum.
Davis, using his famous cue which cost only 7s 6d, was given a great reception.
The 53-year-old chamrion said: "That just about crowns everything. I fee’ done everything that can be expected.”
Davis is not the first player to make a break of 147. Clark McConachy, of
New Zealand, did so in 1952. hut it was not recognised by the Billiards Association and Control Council as the table was found to be slightly over the standard dimensions.
