Commander (S) W. N. Waite, R.N.Z.N. was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court by Mr Justice Gresson in Wellington last week. A supply and secretariat officer. Commander Waite has left for England for exchange service with the Royal Navy. He is a qualified accountant and holds a Master of Commerce degree.

Messrs W. H. Brown and H. A. Gilbert, representing the North and South Island Motor Unions respectively, will attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the Automobile Association of Great Britain in London next June. Mr Brown is president of the North Island union and Mr Gilbert is editor of the “New Zealand Motor World.”

Tributes to the outstanding given by the Rev. Carl Tanner to the parish of St. James, Riccarton, where he has been vicar for the last 11 years, and by Mrs Tanner, were paid by manyspeakers at a meeting of parishioners held at St. James Sunday School hall last evening. Mr L. H. Hale, the vicar’s warden presided and Mr H. Powell, the people’s warden, presented the. guests of honour with a fireside chair and a cheque, from yestrymen and members of the congregation. A shoulder spray was also presented to Mrs Tanner. Mr Tanner will leave this week to take up his appointment as vicar of Geraldine.

Mr J. B. Price has been appointed managing director of the local board of directors created by the London directors of the Shell Company of New Zealand, Ltd., to bring the company into line with other companies of the organisation and to keep pace with the Dominion’s economic and industrial development. Messrs C. H. Jackson, C. F. McKinney and A. F. Castle have been appointed directors, and Mr S. W. Hodgson becomes secretary. Mr J. W. Platt, who is a New Zealander, is chairman' of the company in London. Mr Arthur Bullock, a former news editor of the “Auckland Star,’’ has retired after 50 years in journalism. He joined the “Star” in 1903 at the age of 29, and six years later was appointed Parliamentary Press Gallery correspondent. He served in that capacity for 10 years, and was chief reporter of the paper for the next 10 years. He was news editor between 1929 and 1940.
