Mrs T. M. Watson (Merrivale, Southland), who has been on a goodwill tour of Britain representing country women of New Zealand, is expected to return to New Zealand early this week. Mrs H. S. S. Kyle and Miss Alison Kyle (Templeton) left Christchurch by air on Friday for a visit to Sydney. Mrs Shears has arrived in Wellington to join the secretarial staff of the Canadian High Commissioner’s office. Before joining the service of the. Canadian Government, Mrs Shears was secretary to the airport manager at Gander, the lonely outpost in Newfoundland that handles trans-Atlantic airliners.

Miss E. A. Joyce, matron of St. Hospital, Auckland, will retire next month after having spent 17 years at the hospital. Miss Joyce took a

course in bookkeeping and was in business before she began her nursing training. Before she went to St. Helens, Auckland, Miss Joyce pursed at St. Helens Hospital in Dunedin and Wellington, -and also Worked in Invercargill and Wanganui, and at the Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. The annual picnic of the Veterans’ Association of Army, Navy, and Auxiliary Forces was held at Abberley Park and was attended by a good gathering of veterans, wives, children, and grandchildren.

Mrs J. Watling presided at the January meeting of the Halswell Garden Club, held at Woodend Beach. Mrs J. Slack gave an interesting talk on the culture of bulbs. Competitions resulted as follows: cut blooms, one rose, Mrs Slack 1, Miss Carter 2; one carnation, Miss Watling 1, Mrs Slack 2, Miss Carter 3: decorative (driftwood arrangement), A class, Miss Edwards 1, Mrs Pickering 2, Mrs Slack 3; B class, Mrs McCracken 1, Mrs Ware 2, Mrs Tothill 3.
