AMBITIOUS LAND EXPERIMENT

Transformation Of Australian Area

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA. January 22. The Australian Government will launch an ambitious experiment aimed at transforming an area the size of England and Wales in the “Dead Heart” of Australia into a cattlecarrying country. The Minister of Territories (Mr Paul Hasluck) last night announced the first steps in the scheme which, it is hoped, will result in raising an additional 250.000 cattle. Mr Hasluck said that Government experts and scientists will fence ofl 50 square miles of desert and run 100 steers on it for two or three years. Continuous observations of the stock and the response of the country to various treatments will be made. The Minister said that the experts think the “huge area of desert” can carry spinifex grass, and if the experiment is successfull the area will be classified and offered for leasehold.
