TROTTING Caduceus’s Smart Effort At Motukarara Matinee
Interesting racing and fast times were the order of the day at Motukarara on Saturday, when the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club held its annual matinee meeting. There was an attendance of about 350. An equalisator was operated. Many particularly well-bred young horses were seen in action and the standard of racing was high. A feature of the meeting was the display given by Caduceus in the Banks’ Peninsula Trotting Handicap, the principal event. Caduceus conceded starts of up to 144 yards, and, although at no stage looked likely to take part in the finish, he did remarkably well to finish in tenth position in about the middle of the field. The race was won bv Count Grattan, which recorded 3min 16 2-ssec from the front mark. Caduceus was not timed, but he made up about three parts of his handicap. Of the two-year-olds, none was more impressive than Fiord, a half-brother to Rupee: and of the maiden performers the trotter, With You, and Van Dieman's four-year-old brother. General Bruce. showed marked promise. Count Grattan’s Win Never far away in the running. Count Grattan trailed La Fey and Cassado into the straight in the Banks peninsula Trotting Club Handicap, and after being pulled out to challenge early in the run in he finished full of running to score by a length and a half. His task was made easy when Cassado, which looked lhe likely winner, tangled with a furlong and a half to run. Cassado settled down again and finished on into third, four lengths behind Sue Scott, which had been well placed all the way. Sue Scott was not knocked about, and she did well to finish second. She should soon win. La Fey tired a little to finish fourth, three lengths behind Cassado. She had raced on the outside of the leader for most of the way. The early leader, Moreta, tired to finish fifth, five lengths away, and there was a gap of two lengths to Fervent Scott, which lost several lengths at the start. Next to finish were Sonlight, Double Talk, Deveron, Caduceus and Our Roger. Cadpceus, from 144 yards behind, gave a very impressive display. He is in grand order. Trueco in Form
The highly-regarded Trueco gave further evidence of his ability when he won the Halswell Handicap by half a length without much apparent effort. Well handled by I. Aitken, Trueco made up ground over the last mile to be handy to the leaders approaching the straight He finished full of running and was not troubled to hold on and win from the fast-finishing Wha’ Hae.
Wha’ Hae was slow early, and a long way back with a mile to run. He was not prominent at the straight entrance, but he worked his way through the field in the run to the post with a fine run. He looks to be at his peak. Loyal Mary also finished well for third, but more impressive was Corinthian, which finished a close fourth after losing ground early in the race. Great Dillon finished fifth, followed in by Barney Dillon, Palmarie and Sage GirL From Bellissima Ceremony was impressive in winning the Akaroa Handicap in 3min 23 l-ssec. This three-year-old filly by U. Scott from the good trotting mare. Bellissima. was handily placed in the running, and she showed pace m the run to the post to win by a head from Cynical. Ceremony is trained bv her owner, C. R. Berkett, at Templeton. She should develop into a good winner. Cvnical did not become prominent until the straight was reached, but then she made a fine burst of speed. Oniral is a four-year-old bay mare

TWELVE PACERS QUALIFY TEST RACES AT MOTUKARARA The possible number of 12 horses qualified to race at totalise tor ..meetings in trials at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club.’s annual meeting at Motukarara oh
Saturday. Among them were some wellbred pacers, and several looked, to bet near race-winning standard. The first qualifying test race, was won by General Bruce, a four-year-old black colt by U. Scott from Reno trained £t Belfast by J. G. Hampton for Mr K. N. Langford. The brother to, Van Dieman was never far away in thfe running, and he fought on gamely in the straight to gain a narrow verdict. He is a sensible pacer, and should soon earn distinction. Second in this race was Battalion, a bay gelding by Light Brigade from Anita Patch, the dam of Aladdin. Battalion broke at the start and lost about 24 yards. After making up his handicap he was taken into the lead with three furlongs and a half to run. Without being asked for undue effort he finished well, fdr his placing. This three-year-old is trained by H. R. Henderson at Methven for Mr P. A. Watson. The second test race was won in 3min 26 3-ssec by Gold Mist, a four-year-oljd bay mare by Light Brigade from a good race mare, Gold Peg. Gold Mist made up a lot of ground over the last round, and won decisively. She is owned by Messrs Benny Bros., and is trained at Springston by G. S. Benny. ' Dryden Lad, a five-year-old bay gelding by Kingcobra from Trixie Bingen, finished second in this heat, showing much promise. / The third test race was won in effortless fashion by Francora, a three-year-old bay gelding by Lila's Walla from Little Jocelyn, trained at Weedons by his owner, R. J. Butterick. Francora was a little slow at the start. He worked into the lead with five furlongs to go, and from then on was always pacing easily to hold a two-length advantage at the post. He is a half-brother to Royal Brigade. Lyrical Lass finished second in this race after being handy all the way. A three-year-old by Gay Lyric from Super Volo she is trained at Belfast by her owner. C. A. Winter. Third in this race was Zulu Grattan, a four-year-old gelded brother to Zulu. In looks he is very unlike his well-per-formed brother, but the ability is definitely there. He is trained at Charteris Bay by his owner, D. R. V. Manson. Results were:— FIRST QUALIFYING TEST RACE; one mile and a half.—K. N. Langford’s blk c GENERAL BRUCE by U. Scott—Reno 4yrs J. G.
