BOWLS SEVEN PAIRS LEFT IN CENTRE COMPETITION
The Christchurch bowling centre’s open pairs competition was continued on Saturday. Conditions were unfavourable in the morning. The overnight rain had made the greens very ' heavy, but they were still taking a [fairly wide draw. Many players were finding difficulty in getting their bowls up to the head. After the first game of the day had been in progress about an hour rain 1 delayed play for an hour. On the Fendalton green there was no play for a much longer period, as the rain was much heavier than in other parts and the green became almost flooded. The other three games were not started until the afternoon and they were reduced to 16 heads and the time limit shortened from two hours to an hour and a half.
Play was not of the same standard as on the first day, and many games were won by big margins. During the afternoon the greens livened up considerably, and it was then that players who could not readily adapt themselves to the changing conditions joined the ranks of those eliminated earlier. Of the 203 T pairs who entered the competition there were only two twolifers and five one-lifers left at the end of play on Saturday. As the next two Saturdays will be taken up with the open singles, the remaining rounds of the pairs will be concluded on February 12. J. B. Rennie (Canterbury), who played off with H. P. Rennie (Fendalton) in the final last year, was eliminated in his first game on Saturday by A. M. Duthie (Dallington). H. P. Rennie, last year’s winner, survived only three rounds. Bad bowling was seen on the final head in the game between R. Dick (Sydenham) and F. Spencer (Fendalton). Spencer looked a certain winner, being four up with one head to play, but let Dick score five on the last head to win. The bowling of Dick and his lead was not much better, as the nearest shot was three feet away from the kitty. H. Deavoll. a strong Belfast skip, went through his seven games without loss and as he had a bye in the last round he will enter the final stages with his two lives intact. All his games were won by comfortable margins. D. Vaughan (Linwood), a former Dunedin player with many centre titles to his credit, is the other skip with two lives, although he had two very narrow wins when he met players with
only one life. In the second game of the day he beat A. M. Duthie (Dallington), 15-14. In the last game of the day against J. Stapleton (Beckenham), Vaughan was behind all the way until the tenth end, when the score was 10-10. Then Stapleton went away to lead 15-11 with only two heads to play, and on a three-quarter head he scored four to bring the score level again. On the last head, Vaughan took one shot to win his second game against a onelifer by one. H. Hirst (R.S.A.), who was a member of the winning pair in the Dominion tournament in Christchurch in 1950, lost his first life to J. Musgrave (Canterbury) in the first game, and was then eliminated in a close game when he went down, 13-12, to A. Black (Christchurch) in his third game. Black Was then eliminated in his next
fame by C. Rowe (Opawa), in another close game, 15-14. J. Huddleston (Mount Pleasant), a very prominent player in centre tournaments and winner of last year’s Easter fours, still holds one life, but all his games on Saturday were easily won. J. Findlay (Amberley), who has competed in most centre tournaments with only moderate success, is one of the one-lifers left and should he carry on playing as he has done, he will be hard to beat, although many of his games have been very close. The results were:—

THREE FOURS COMPETITION Great interest has been taken in the three fours competition, as at the end of the rounds there were five clubs which had lost only one game, and this required a play off. As the greens have been occupied for the Christmas and open pairs tournaments, the play-off in this competition will commence on February 5, when Canterbury will play Beckenham at United. On February 12, United will play the winners of this game. Christchurch will also play Opawa on the same day, and in the afternoon the finaF will be decided.
