CLASSIFICATION OF FILMS

Sir,—We have in New Zealand a film censor, whose job it is to classify the various films, “A” for adult audiences, and “U” for universal exhibition. What I cannot understand is why there is not a little more co-operation on the part of the managers of the local cinemas. Repeatedly we see films advertised which carry an “A” certificate, and on the same programme there is often another film with a “U” certificate; and diten it is a film which has a special appeal for ,children. While not suggesting that films are the sole cause of juvenile delinquency, it must oe conceded that films do have a bearing on the subject. Would it not be possible for the managers of our pic-ture-houses to exercise a little more discretion and group the films “A” and “U” accordingly? Or does the financial aspect far outweigh all other considerations?—Yours, etc., E.C.B. January 19, 1955.
