EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA
NO INVITATION TO AUSTRALIA
CANBERRA, January 20. Australia has not been invited to join* the British expedition which plans to cross the Antarctic continent, the Minister of External Affairs (Mr R. G. Casey) said last night. But, he said, Australia is already fully occupied with her own exploration and research projects in the Antarctic. He added: “In the Antarctic we are stretched Almost to the limit of our resources of money and man-power. New Zealand has no Antarctic preoccupations at present. “I expect that this is why they have been invited to join the projected British expedition. “I have had no official request to contribute an Australian component fw the expedition. The expedition is unlikely to come into Australian Antarctic territory. “So far as we know, they intend to cross the continent from the British side to somewhere near the Ross Sea.
