SURPLUS U.S. BUTTER
No More British
Imports
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 20. Britain will not be in the market for surplus American butter, the High Commissioner’s office indicated here today.
A spokesman said the office had received a London message saying import licences under which British importers could buy American butter would expire at the end of January and “the British Government has no present intention of renewing them.” Very little butter has been imported under these permits. The prospect of heavy British buying of American surplus butter at low prices had alarmed the Australian and New Zealand dairy industry.
