NEW AUSTRALIAN WHEAT
VARIETY BELIEVED SUITABLE IN N.Z. "The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, January 13. A new Australian variety of wheat called Gabo may be suitable for New Zealand conditions, in the view of officers of the crop research section of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Department of Agriculture. Recently they inspected wheat variety trials in Manawatu, Wairarapa and central Hawke’s Bay. Estimates suggest that Gabo will outyield Tainui, which is the most popular variety in these districts at present, by several bushels an acre. The trial blocks will be saved for seed, and it is proposed to try Gabo on paddock scale next season. The main advantage of Gabo over Tainui is that it is stiffer in the straw and thus less inclined to lodge under high fertility conditions. It also matures earlier. It has the same good milling and baking qualities as Tainui.
