Martial Law Ends In Phenix City

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MONTGOMERY (Alabama), Jan. 10. Mr Gordon Persons, retiring Governor of Alabama, today proclaimed the end of martial law in Phenix City from midnight of January 17 and ordered National Guard units to be withdrawn from that date. Mr Persons declared martial rule on July 22, 1954, and battle-equipped Alabama National Guardsmen moved in to take over most of the duties of law enforcement officials of the city and county. The Governor said at the time that the guardsmen would remain in command until they had wiped out the “lawlessness, intimidation, tumult, and fear” that had gripped the city’s 23,000 residents since the assassination on June 18 of Mr Albert Patterson, who had just been chosen as Attorney-Gen-eral of Alabama.
